Kenmore East High School will present its spring musical, "Once On This Island," at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, March 30-April 1, at the school, 350 Fries Road.
The acclaimed Broadway musical was the winner of the 1995 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical and is based on the book "My Love, My Love," also known as "The Peasant Girl," by Rosa Guy. Inspiration for the story is a mix between "Romeo and Juliet" and "The Little Mermaid."
The story is set in the Antilles archipelago and, through Caribbean-style music and dance, tells the story of a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with a wealthy boy from the other side of the island. The gods who rule the island send the girl on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of prejudice, hatred and even death.
Nearly 60 students have worked on the show since January, including the pit band, a full chorus and the stage and production crew.
Tickets are $8 presale and $10 at the door.
