False report of rental car theft lands Niagara Falls man in hot water

TOWN OF NIAGARA – A B Street man was arrested last week after falsely reporting that his rental vehicle had been stolen, town police said.

Police said on Tuesday they were called to the home of Michael J. Hanusin, who told officers someone stole a blue Chevrolet Malibu he recently rented. Police said they later stopped the car and learned from the driver that he had rented the vehicle from Hanusin. He showed officers text messages backing up his claim, police said.

Hanusin was charged with falsely reporting an incident. Police said the suspect told them he reported the vehicle stolen so he would not be "responsible" for it.
