The City of Tonawanda Common Council on Tuesday approved contracts with four volunteer fire companies that help protect the city.
The fire companies contracted are Delaware Hose No. 2 and Niagara Hose Company No. 3, both located in 74 Wheeler St., and Union Hook and Ladder Company No. 1 and National Hose Company No. 1, both located at 44 William St.
The Council agreed Tuesday to provide each volunteer company with $6,500 a year for training and equipment. According to the city website, the volunteer fire departments provide 30 volunteer firefighters and 12 fire police officers to assist the city's paid force of firefighters.
The volunteers work with the City of Tonawanda's four-platoon force of 27 paid firefighters, including a chief and commanding officers.
