Letter: Eliminating literacy test for teachers is a mistake

Eliminating literacy test for teachers is a mistake

Regarding the New York State Regents eliminating a requirement that aspiring teachers must pass a literacy test, it is very disheartening to see that even at the Regents level, teacher welfare and political correctness have higher priority than kids learning. To whom are they being “fair”?

Illiterate teachers! If a bachelor’s degree is sufficient evidence of literacy, why can’t they pass the exam? If you’re black or Hispanic and/or poor, and have kids, let’s hope you can afford private school or have an opportunity for a charter school, so your children have some chance to break the terrible education/poverty spiral. Looks like the teachers won’t be capable and our Regents don’t intend to help.
