IRWIN, William Warren "Bill"
IRWIN - William Warren "Bill" September 12, 1933 - March 1, 2017 William "Big Bill" Irwin died peacefully in his sleep March 1, 2017. Bill was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. He graduated from Nichols School in 1951 and went on to graduate from Williams College in 1955 where he was captain of the hockey team. He served in the United States Navy as a radar man. Bill went to work for Taft Broadcasting eventually managing both WGR - AM and WGRQ - FM in Buffalo and went on to manage radio stations in Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Colorado Springs and Albuquerque. He retired to Tucson, AZ in 2002. He was President of New York Broadcasters Association, and Buffalo Radio Association Group; Director of North Carolina and Albuquerque Radio Broadcasters. He was always active in the community as Director of the Greater Buffalo Development Foundation, Western New York Association for the Blind, American Heart Association of Western New York and Albuquerque Economic Forum. He was a Vestryman for Trinity Church in Buffalo, and was on the Executive Committee for The Charlie Pride Senior PGA Golf Tournament and Tim Horton Memorial Gold Tournament. A lifelong hockey player and fan, he was an ardent supporter of the Buffalo Sabres. His warmth and humor was at once disarming and genuine. He touched many lives young and old. He loved his family, martinis, grilling, hockey and his native city of Buffalo.
Bill is survived by his former wife Barbara of Colorado, daughter Midge of Arizona, son Dudley (Tania) of Colorado, daughter Dede (David) Bennell of Maine and son Wick (Sheila) of California as well as his nine grandchildren: Kelsee, Madison, Jocelyn, Katharine, Ryder, Jesse, Hayden, Morgan and Grayson. Big Bill will forever be in our hearts. Memorials may be made to the Dudley M. Irwin Award at Nichols School or Buffalo Niagara Riverkeeper.
