TALTY, Karen Anne

TALTY - Karen Anne Age 64, a lifelong resident of Buffalo and Alexandria, VA passed away unexpectedly at her Virginia home on January 31, 2017. Karen was born in Buffalo on June 15, 1952 to Dr. Joseph P. and Maryellen Donahue Talty. She graduated from Mount Mercy Academy and The University of Buffalo where she earned a degree in Sociology. After graduating in 1974, she relocated to Alexandria, VA where she began a thirty year career with the former West Publishing. Karen thrived with every opportunity offered. Starting at the bottom she became one of the national sales leaders and eventually Vice President and General Manager of the Thomson Reuters Westlaw's Washington, DC office. On December 31, 1989, she married her beloved Rainer Peters. Karen, in spite of her career responsibilities, found time for her family. Her Virginia home became a stop off for the entire family when they visited DC. She devotedly cared for Rainer as he dealt with a series of health problems. After retiring in 2008, Karen traveled extensively visiting and encouraging her family to do the same. She mentored and inspired all of her nieces and nephews. She enjoyed spending her summers at her lake home in Angola, NY and boating with her dear friends. In Ireland she felt at home and cherished the extended conversations with the Irish. She anguished over how difficult it was for her grandparents to leave home as teenagers never to see their parents again. Karen was involved with several different charities including Dress for Success, Heritage for the Blind, American Heart Association and the Moe Talty Franz Memorial Walk. She always believed in helping others and strived to make a difference in people's lives. She would always be the first to volunteer or help in any way she could, giving so generously in any way possible. She will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her. Karen is survived by three brothers, Joseph (Eileen) of Colorado, Michael of Florida, Tim (Leslie) of Michigan; two sisters, Colleen (Phil) of Florida, Sheila (Armand) of Connecticut, 13 nieces and nephews; her Aunt Blanche Talty of Buffalo, NY; along with numerous cousins. She is predeceased by her husband Rainer, her parents, and a sister, Maureen (Robert) Franz. Dearest Aunt of Molly (Pat), Katie (Mark), Michael, Robert (Jill), Ellen, Caitlin, Richard, Mark, Joey, Lauren, Mamie, Kevin, and Sheila.
