Notre Dame's Brey loves Gov. Christie's enthusiasm

Buffalo has learned that Chris Christie is a Notre Dame fan. Coach Mike Brey says Christie might be the most knowledgeable one.

The New Jersey governor created a buzz Thursday by sitting behind the Fighting Irish bench during the NCAA Tournament. Christie cheered the team’s victory and posed for pictures with fans in KeyBank Center.

“He knows more about my team than some of my staff,” Brey said Friday. “The guy's unbelievably plugged into our stuff, so love having him around.”

Christie’s daughter Sarah is a student-manager for the Notre Dame basketball team. Christie, an alumnus of the University of Delaware, has known Brey since the coach led the school’s squad from 1995 to 2000.

“When I got the job he was just an attorney,” Brey said. “Big hoops guy and was real supportive of my program. Now his daughter is at N.D. and is a manager for us. We were great friends when I was in Newark, Del., and he was a hoops fan lawyer from New Jersey.”
