A Lockport man has been charged with performing a lewd act aboard a flight from Fort Lauderdale to Buffalo earlier this month.
Gerald McErlean, 46, is accused of exposing himself and performing a lewd act on the Southwest Airlines flight on March 8, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.
Two women reported seeing McErlean engaging in the act and they tried to block a toddler traveling with them from seeing what was happening. McErlean stopped when one of the women said something, authorities said.
Another passenger notified a flight attendant and McErlean was moved to a seat in the back of the plane. The cabin lights were kept on for the rest of the flight, according to authorities.
McErlean, who was released on bail, is scheduled to appear Friday before U.S. Magistrate Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder for a detention hearing. If found guilty, McErlean faces a maximum of 90 days in prison and a $5,000 fine.
