Sen. Charles Schumer is pushing back against what he sees as threats to deductions for mortgage interest and local and state property taxes.
"Taking away these deductions on federal tax returns would be brutally unfair and would hit Erie County homeowners right between the eyes," Schumer said in a statement on Thursday. He visited Amherst to call attention to the issue.
Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin in remarks this month said the Trump administration will preserve the mortgage interest deduction. But Schumer said the Republican-led Congress could still push to eliminate the mortgage interest deduction, and that deductions for local and state property taxes remained at risk, as well.
