The Canisius Golden Griffins will continue their basketball season by playing Samford in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, it was announced Sunday night.
The game will be 7:30 p.m. Tuesday on the Samford campus in Birmingham, Ala.
The 34-team event is held for teams in mid-major conferences with a record of .500 or better. The Griffs are 18-15. Fellow Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference teams St. Peter’s and Fairfield also are in the field.
Samford (19-15) finished seventh in the 10-team Southern Conference but had its first winning record in 11 seasons and reached the semifinals of the conference tournament before losing to Furman.
Like Canisius, Samford’s strength is offense. Samford ranks 46th in the nation in scoring (79.4 ppg). Canisius is 61st (78.5). Samford is 12th in three-point percentage (40.3). Canisius is 65th (37.4).
The CIT is a play-to-play event in which the host teams pay some of the costs in hope of recouping the expense with ticket sales. Pairings are determined after each round is played. Canisius will look to rebound from a loss to St. Peter’s in the quarterfinals of the MAAC Tournament.
