What to watch for Wednesday
1. Girls basketball - Section VI finals at Buffalo State
Class B: Fredonia (B-1) vs. Wilson (B-2), 4:30 p.m.
These familiar postseason foes rode performances from their senior standouts to sectional titles on Sunday. Now they meet to see which one earns a berth to Saturday's Far West Regionals at Buffalo State.
The Hillbillies (18-6), who've eliminated Wilson in the B-2 semis the last two years, got 28 points and 16 rebounds from Hannah Cybart to take down top-seeded Depew. Rachel Senek and Kayla Neumann scored a combined 39 to lead the Lakewomen (20-3) in a blowout win over Medina.
Class A: Williamsville South (A-1) vs. Amherst (A-2), 6 p.m.
A pair of eighth-graders led the Billies (20-3) and Tigers (19-4) in scoring to help their teams win sectional titles on Sunday.
Amari DeBerry had 21 points for South, which swept Amherst in ECIC II this season in two close games: 53-50 at home and 57-53 on the road. Emma Klein scored a career-high 23 for the Tigers, who also also feature a player of the year candidate in Claire Wanzer.
Class AA: 1-Clarence vs. 2-Frontier, 7:30 p.m.
ECIC I rivals Clarence (20-2) and Frontier (15-7) snapped long playoff droughts with semifinal wins last Friday. These teams split during the regular season. The Falcons won the first game in January, 46-40, and the Red Devils evened the series with a 38-35 win last month. Clarence hasn't won a sectional title since 2005, while Frontier is still looking for its first in program history.
