The Canisius men’s basketball team has accepted an invitation to play in the ninth annual CollegeInsiders.com Postseason Tournament, coach Reggie Witherspoon announced Tuesday. The Golden Griffins’ first-round opponent will be announced later this week.
By accepting the invitation to the CIT, Canisius (18-15) will play in the national postseason for the fourth time in the last five years.
Witherspoon indicated the Griffs' season would continue after the team lost in the quarterfinals of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament Friday night.
"I think it’ll be good for us," Witherspoon said. "It’ll be good for our seniors to put the uniform back on. It’ll be good for our younger guys to get more practices and as many more games as we can possibly get."
The Griffs have made a run to the CIT quarterfinals twice in the previous three postseason appearances, most recently in 2015. That year, the Griffs lost to New Jersey Institute of Technology in the round of eight after earning wins over Dartmouth and Bowling Green. Canisius hosted a first-round game in 2014 and lost to VMI, and the team advanced to the 2013 CIT quarterfinal round with wins over Elon and Youngstown State before falling at home to Evansville. The 2013 CIT berth was the program’s first national postseason appearance since 1996.
