Flach announces candidacy for Niagara County Legislature seat

NIAGARA FALLS - Jeffrey E. Flach, a 20-year Army veteran and owner of a hostel in downtown Niagara Falls, plans to run for the Niagara County Legislature in the 6th District.

That district is currently represented by Democrat Dennis F. Virtuoso, the Legislature minority leader, who is in his 13th term. He is expected to run again.

Flach, 46, who earned Bronze Stars in Iraq and Afghanistan, retired from the Army as a major in 2013.  He bought the former Red Lounge Hostel on Third Street in 2014, renovated it and reopened it as the Gorge View Hostel.

“I love this building and consider it a micro-version of the city itself,” Flach said. “I’m three years into a 10-year restoration plan that is based purely on revenue reinvestment, and the plan is on track. It doesn’t take grants or tax breaks. It just takes a good plan, hard work, and persistence to turn it around.”

He called for more government transparency and said he opposes the state's notion of building a lodge on Goat Island.
