March Madness, the best time of the year for college basketball fans, has finally arrived. Actually, it began before the calendar flipped. The Atlantic Sun and Big South began their conference tourneys early this week. On Thursday, the MAAC Tournament starts in Albany.
On March 16 and 18 (Thursday-Saturday), the KeyBank Center will host first- and second-round NCAA men's games. It's our sixth time hosting, going back to 2000.
It would be great if one of our men's teams made the eight-team field here. Canisius and Niagara aren't eligible because the MAAC is host. But UB and St. Bonaventure could play here. Imagine if one of them got in and pulled an upset in front of the hometown fans.
This is where I remind people that a Buffalo men's team hasn't won a game in the NCAA tourney proper since 1970, on the day Bob Lanier hurt his knee in the regional final. Niagara won a play-in game as a 16 seed in 2007, which doesn't count.
So we've been waiting 47 years. And you thought the Bills drought was long.
