What to watch for Tuesday
1. Boys basketball - Section VI semifinals at Buffalo State
- 1-Williamsville South vs. 4-McKinley, 5:15 p.m.
- 2-North Tonawanda vs. 3-Grand Island, 6:45 p.m.
- 2-Cheektowaga vs. 3-South Park, 8:15 p.m.
It's not officially Buff State Week without a Williamsville South-McKinley matchup. The Billies (18-3) topped the Macks (15-6) in last year's Class A-1 final, 67-63. Greg Dolan and Dakota Wiley lead No. 1 large school South against McKinley's strong duo of Davonti Wardlaw and Taivonne Martin.
The other A-1 game is an all-Niagara Frontier League semifinal between North Tonawanda (17-4) and Grand Island (15-6). The Lumberjacks won their lone matchup in the regular season, 63-51. The scoring duel between NT junior Trevor Book and Vikings sophomore Cam Sionko should be fun to watch.
Cheektowaga star Dominick Welch needs 25 points to break Ritchie Campbell's career scoring record. Welch and the Warriors (14-7) will be going up against Yale Cup I champ South Park (16-4), winners of 11 straight. Shakur Harris and Raymond Mushat are the top scorers for the Sparks.
2. Girls basketball - Section VI Class A-2 semifinals at Sweet Home
Spectators at Sweet Home are in for a treat on Tuesday. All four teams in action are ranked among the top nine in the latest News large schools poll.
2-Lake Shore vs. 3-Amherst, 5:30 p.m.
The Eagles (20-1) and Tigers (17-4) start it off in a rematch from early December, which Lake Shore won, 62-52. Raeann White, Shayla Scanlan and Tashawni Cornfield lead the Eagles, who only lost to No. 1 small school Depew this season. Amherst's top player is Niagara commit Claire Wanzer, who averages nearly 20 points per game.
1-Kenmore East vs. 4-Olean, 7:30 p.m.
Kenmore East (19-2) takes on defending Class B champ Olean (18-3) in the nightcap. Kendall Mills and Serena Sordetto both average around 16 ppg for the Bulldogs, who've won 14 in a row since their last loss on Dec. 22. The Huskies feature sophomore Sara Pfeiffer, the only player in Section VI to score more than 500 points this season.
3. Boys basketball - Section VI semifinals at Jamestown CC
- 1-Randolph vs. 4-Frewsburg, 5:15 p.m.
- 2-East vs. 6-Barker, 6:45 p.m.
- 2-Ellicottville vs. 3-Franklinville, 8:15 p.m.
Top-seeded Randolph (17-4), led by the trio of Tyler Hind, Jarrett Lecceadone and Jake Beaver, takes on a No. 4 Frewsburg (17-3), which has won 14 of its last 15 games.
East (14-7) and Barker (9-12) make the long drive to JCC for their semifinal matchup. Panthers junior Willard Anderson and Raiders senior Nathan Luckman are two of the top scorers in Western New York.
Ellicottville (16-3) takes on Franklinville (17-4) in the rubber match between these rivals. The Eagles won, 53-52, on Franklinville's home court, while the Panthers returned the favor with a 64-55 win at Ellicottville.
4. Girls basketball - Section VI Class AA quarterfinals
- 8-Orchard Park at 1-Clarence, 7 p.m.
- 5-Niagara-Wheatfield at 4-Jamestown, 7 p.m.
- 7-Kenmore West at 2-Frontier, 7 p.m.
- 6-Lancaster at 3-Lockport, 7 p.m.
Clarence (18-2) swept Orchard Park (10-11) in ECIC I play this year. Niagara-Wheatfield (9-8) heads to Jamestown (8-12) for a game between teams that finished in the middle of their respective divisions.
Claire Kruska (13.5 ppg), Kennedy Izzo (12.8 ppg) and ECIC I runner-up Frontier (13-7) hosts Anna Quinlan (12.2 ppg) and Kenmore West (9-12). Lancaster (11-9) visits Lockport (13-7), which lost the last two games of the regular season after winning the eight straight before that. The Legends also lost their previous two games but have a quality win over Frontier from Feb. 7.
The winners here move on to Friday's semifinals at Sweet Home.
