HAMMAR - Sven E. January 22, 1930-January 30, 2017, born in Moscow, ID, also lived in Lipscomb County, TX, Rochester, NY, Cleveland, OH, and, for the last 46 years, in Western New York. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Shirley Sampson; two sons Sven Jr. and Martin (Susan); daughters Anita Studer (Michael) and Charlotte (Mark); brother Peter (Diane); sister Ellen Thompson (Richard); and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His professional career included teaching at the high school and college level in Cleveland and as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Education at the State University College at Fredonia. Later, his focus was on the needs of the elderly. He served as Executive Director of the Chautauqua County Retired Senior Volunteer Program and Director of the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging. He was also a partner in the ownership of two adult care facilities in Middletown, NY and Warsaw, NY. Other positions of note were Legislative Assistant to the City Council in Cleveland, Education NCO in the army, where he served during the Korean War and Senior Staff Member at the Foreign Policy Association. Mr. Hammar donated his body to the UB Medical School for research and teaching. The family is planning a celebration of his life. He wanted very few possessions, but liked to give to a number of organizations. High on his list were the Alzheimer's Association of WNY, Alzheimer's Disease Research, his local public radio stations (WBFO and WNED-Classical) and the Carter Center. Memorials may be made to any of these organizations.
