Medaille College captured the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference men’s basketball championship Sunday with a 74-58 victory over La Roche College of Pittsburgh in the Kevin I. Sullivan Center. The victory gave the host Mavericks an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament which will begin next weekend. Medaille will learn its opponent and the site for its first round game today.
Coach Mike Blaine’s Mavericks (21-6) built a 38-23 first half lead and controlled play through the second half. Meghale Ford of Medaille led the scoring with 24 points. Mike Hollenback had 14 points and 12 rebounds for the winners. Ford and Hollenbeck made the all-tournament team.
Meanwhile in Pittsburgh, the Medaille women’s basketball team fell to La Roche, 91-62, in the AMCC tournament championship game. The host Red Hawks led 44-30 at the half. Dani Reinwald (Clymer) was high scorer for Medaille with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Lauren Jensen (Iroquois) had 15 points.
La Roche secured the AMCC’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
