Extra points from an 0-for-3 night for Big 4 basketball teams Friday:
MAC RACE (TOP FOUR GET A BYE): Akron (13-3), Ohio (10-5), Ball State (9-6), UB (9-7), Western Michigan (8-7), Kent State (8-7), Toledo (8-7), Northern Illinois (7-8).
KEY UB TIE-BREAKS: UB beat Ball State and Western Michigan and split with Kent. But Kent beat Akron, so Kent has the head-to-head tie-break over UB.
UB SCHEDULE: The Bulls visit Ohio Tuesday and finish at home against Bowling Green Friday. Going 2-0 would solve all their problems.
MAC SATURDAY: UB fans need to root for Ohio to beat Kent State at 7 p.m. Saturday and Western Michigan to beat Ball State at 2 p.m. Let Ohio cruise to the No. 2 seed and Bulls avoid a two-way tie with Kent.
CANISIUS LOSS: The Golden Griffins’ loss to Fairfield Friday night makes their situation simple (sort of, see below): Canisius needs to upset St. Peter’s at 2 p.m. Sunday at home.
MAAC RACE (TOP 5 GET A BYE): Monmouth (17-2), St. Peter’s (13-6), Iona (12-7), Siena (11-8), Canisius (10-9), Fairfield (10-9), Rider (9-10), Quinnipiac (7-12), Niagara (6-13), Marist (5-14), Manhattan (5-15).
KEY GRIFF TIE-BREAKS: Canisius wins a two-way tie with Fairfield and wins a three-way tie with Fairfield and Siena. But Canisius loses a three-way tie-break with Fairfield and Rider.
KEY SUNDAY MAAC GAMES: St. Peter’s at Canisius, Marist at Siena, Fairfield at Niagara, Rider at Quinnipiac, Monmouth at Iona.
CANISIUS OUTLOOK: Canisius can’t rely on Niagara beating Fairfield Sunday. The Griffs need to beat St. Peter’s to get the fifth seed.
IS CANISIUS BETTER OFF LOSING? Should Griff fans even want the fifth seed, since it would mean a quarterfinal meeting with Siena? Then it would mean a semifinal against the heavy favorite, No. 1 seed Monmouth. Debatable. The sixth seed, even though it would require an extra game, might be a better road. No. 6 gets the last-place team in the pre-quarterfinal, then the No. 3, then the No. 2 in the semifinal (presuming a win).
NIAGARA SEEDING: The Purple Eagles, who got waxed by St. Peter's Friday, probably are going to finish ninth and play the eighth-place team (Quinnipiac) in the pre-quarterfinal. Hard to see Marist upsetting Siena on Sunday. However, if Marist beats Siena and Niagara loses to Fairfield, Niagara falls to 10th by virtue of two Ls to Marist.
