Collins’ wife is off-limits, but first lady is fair game
Jeff Simon is correct. The families of public officials not involved in policy should be off-limits to the media and comedians. Regardless of the benefits that accrue to her through Rep. Chris Collins’ self-dealing, his wife is not a public official.
On the other hand, it would be naive to assume that Melania Trump has no skin in the game. She delivered a speech at the Republican convention that plagiarized Michelle Obama. The first lady called the multitude of women who accused President Trump of sexual misconduct “liars.” She posed for salacious pictures, which her husband’s religious supporters would have called obscene, even sinful, if someone else had done so. The president then used those pictures to mock Heidi Cruz. For the first lady, the gloves (and apparently everything else) are off.
