America has no choice; it must engage Russia
The New York Times and other leading American media have evidently decided that President Trump is so dangerous that he must be opposed on just about everything. Actually, I share that general position, but it can also be carried too far.
In particular, it appears as though Trump has correctly decided that we must engage with Russia and pay attention to its national interests, including in Ukraine. However, the difference between my position and his is that I think that international stability and the avoidance of a highly dangerous new Cold War requires us to engage with Russia – despite Vladimir Putin’s autocracy – but he favors engagement with Russia because he admires Putin’s autocracy.
