The conversion of the long-vacant Garden Village Plaza in Cheektowaga into a new $20 million warehouse and distribution complex got a boost Wednesday when the Erie County Industrial Development Agency approved $2.5 million in tax breaks for the project.
Benderson Development plans to demolish about half of the plaza and renovate the rest into a four-building complex at Union and French Roads. The plaza has been vacant for nearly 10 years, and town officials described the property as an eyesore.
While Benderson officials said they have not lined up any tenants for the project, they agreed to pledge to bring 124 new jobs to the site withing two years or else be subject to the loss of at least some of the tax breaks.
"We have waited so long for this," said Cheektowaga Supervisor Diane Benczkowski. "I'm excited we're finally going to see some activity. It's going to revitalize that part of South Cheektowaga."
