Visibility on area roadways tonight could be cut sharply due to fog, the National Weather Service reported.
A dense fog advisory is posted from 2 a.m. to 12 p.m. Thursday for northern Erie, Niagara, Orleans and Genesee counties.
Forecasters caution that hazardous driving conditions are possible due to heavy fog especially east of Lake Erie and south of Lake Ontario.
Areas north of the Thruway are especially vulnerable to heavy fog tonight, according to the forecast.
The fog is being generated by warm moist air flowing across the cool, open waters of the lakes.
Lake Erie's temperature at Buffalo today was 34 degrees. Lake Ontario's water temperature off Rochester was 37 degrees, weather service data showed.
Meanwhile, dewpoints are expected to surge into the 50s overnight, the weather service stated.
