The University at Buffalo men’s basketball team (15-12, 9-5 MAC) will put its six-game Mid-American Conference win streak on the line tonight against Kent State (15-12, 7-7) at Alumni Arena (Radio 1520, 7 p.m.). The Bulls who have not lost since a pair of one-loss decisions on free throws in the final seconds to Miami (Ohio) and Akron Jan. 24 and 28. Since then they have averaged a torrid 86.7 points per game in victories over Central Michigan (twice), Ball State, Northern Illinois, Bowling Green and the return game with Miami.
UB has won seven in a row over Kent State going back to the 2013-14 season, but always expect a tough time against the Golden Flashes, UB won at Kent, 82-69.
One reason Kent State will prove a difficult opponent its 70-67 road win at Akron last Friday night ending the Zips’ 30-game home winning streak, second longest in the nation. Another is senior forward Jimmy Hall who is averaging 18.0 points and 10.4 rebounds a game. Hall had 24 points and 16 rebounds against UB the first game.
Tied for second in the MAC, UB be trying to lock up a top four position in the standings which will bring a first-round by in the MAC playoffs.
In Big 4 women’s play, St. Bonaventure (9-17, 4-10 Atlantic 10) will try to end its conference losing streak which has reached six in a row against Duquesne (14-14, 7-8) at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh. The Bonnies defeated the Dukes, 69-56, on Jan. 21 at the Reilly Center, but has gone 1-6 since. Bona has not won a game in the month of February. It’s the final regular season game for the Bonnies. The first round of the A-10 Tournament will begin Feb. 25 and 26 at campus sites.
