Off-duty sheriff's deputy helps thwart theft of TVs at Sam's Club

An off-duty Erie County Sheriff's deputy helped foil an attempted theft at Sam's Club on Military Road in Niagara Falls Sunday afternoon, according to a city police report. The thief stole a television from the store the day before, the store manager told police.

At about 2:30 p.m. Sunday, the deputy noticed a man pushing a shopping cart containing two televisions toward the back door of the store, according to the report. The man seemed to be in a hurry and kept looking over his shoulder. The deputy followed him and the man pushed the door open, which sounded an alarm.

The deputy identified himself and shouted at the man to stop, but the man began to run. Store personnel arrived and the thief was taken to the store manager's office to await police.

Michael A. Hurd, 37, of Niagara Falls, was charged with petit larceny. He was also identified by a store employee as the person in Saturday's theft and charged for that incident, according to the police report.
