Letter: View of Social Security ignores some key facts

View of Social Security ignores some key facts

A Feb. 6 letter writer and I have a different understanding of Social Security. He states, “it’s my money that was taken from me and my employers over the course of my working career and I am entitled to get it back, with interest.” In fact the program has always been set up so that current workers (“our children, nieces and nephews”) pay into a fund that we draw from when retired.

He gets credit for working and paying into the system that supported his elders, but he doesn’t “get it back.” If he wanted a program that he paid into, accumulated gains and interest while he worked, then withdrew from when he retired, he would have supported President George W. Bush’s idea of a privatized system.
