Joseph N. Gugliuzza of the Town of Tonawanda, president of Buffalo Optical Co., died Tuesday in his Town of Tonawanda home following a short illness. He was 84.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Gugliuzza graduated from Canisius High School and Erie County Technical Institute and also studied at the University at Buffalo.
An Army veteran, he served as a Special Services corpsman at Valley Forge Army Hospital.
Mr. Gugliuzza began his career at Buffalo Optical the 1950s. He seized the opportunity to develop a contact lens service at a time when contact lenses were in their infancy and devoted his career to contact lenses..
Mr. Gugliuzza became president of Buffalo Optical in 2006 and continued to work through 2016. Through his work, he developed strong relationships with co-workers and patients, who held a special place in his life.
Mr. Gugliuzza was an avid runner and a member of the Nickel City Running Club. For many years he ran with the "Grandits Bandits" centipede in the annual Turkey Trot and St. Patrick's Day parade. He also enjoyed his seasonal cottage in Colden.
Mr. Gugliuzza is survived by his wife of 26 years, the former Margaret M. Sheehan; two sons, Michael P. and David J.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian burial was offered Saturday in St. John the Baptist Church, 1085 Englewood Ave.
