A protest and an event offering legal advice to immigrants and resettled refugees are planned for Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday: An event dubbed, Immigrants & Refugees: Know Your Rights!, is scheduled for noon to 4 p.m. in the Jericho Road Community Health Center, 184 Barton. Immigrants and refugees are invited to meet with and hear from volunteer lawyers and community groups. Interpreters will be available in Spanish, Arabic, Burmese, Karen, Nepali, Somali, Swahili, French and Farsi/Dari. The event is being held in cooperation with the state Attorney General's office, the state and city offices for New Americans, Journey's End Refugee Services, Jewish Family Service of Buffalo & Erie County, Legal Aid Bureau of Buffalo, Inc., Erie County Bar Association Volunteer Lawyers Project, Inc., and International Institute of Buffalo.
Sunday: The "No Ban, No Wall" rally in support of immigrant and refugees is scheduled to be held from 1 to 3 p.m. in Columbus Park, off of Niagara Street between Porter Ave. and Connecticut St. A number of local community and religious organizations are involved including: Buffalo Immigrant and Refugee Leadership Team, WNY Council on Occupational Safety and Health, Open Buffalo, Voice, New York Immigration Coalition, Stronger Together, Imams Council of Greater Western New York, Muslim Public Affairs Council, PUSH Buffalo, UB Sanctuary Campus Movement, HEAL International, Catholic Charities, International Institute, Coalition for Economic Justice, Riverside Salem Church, Trinity Church and Buffalo Parent teacher Organization. More than 3,300 people have indicated on the rally's Facebook event page that they plan on attending.
