LOCKPORT - The City of Lockport is making an attempt to repair zombie houses.
The Common Council on Wednesday unanimously passed a law allowing the city to hire a contractor to repair building code violations at houses the city considers abandoned, if the owner doesn't make repairs within 15 days of receiving a notice from the city.
The cost of the repairs, plus a $250 administrative fee, will be billed to the owner of record, and added to the following year's property tax bill if it's not paid. When taxes aren't paid, the city has the right to eventually foreclose on the property.
Lockport officials believe there are more than 100 abandoned houses in the city, which the law blames on "stalled foreclosures or neglectful out-of-town owners."
