Lancaster's Castillo earns preseason All-American nod for baseball

Lancaster outfielder and Oklahoma Sooners commit Leugim Castillo has been named to the 30-player MaxPreps Preseason All-American Team for the 2017 baseball season.

This is the latest preseason honor for Castillo, a first-team All-Western New York pick last year who was selected as a Junior MaxPreps All-American at the conclusion of last season. Castillo, named just last week by MaxPreps as preseason top player in New York State, hit .492 with 13 of his 20 hits going for extra bases, including seven homers last year. He scored 29 times, drove in 26 runs and stole 16 bases in helping the Legends win the Section VI Class AA title.

A three-sport athlete who earned All-Western New York first team honors at wide receiver at the conclusion of the past football season, Castillo participated in the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars last summer – an event used to determine candidates for the national under-18 team.

While he signed with Oklahoma in November, he still could wind up being selected, perhaps in the early rounds, of the Major League Baseball Draft in June.

Last year's Prep Talk Awards Baseball Player of the Year Dan Dallas of Canisius High School signed a letter of intent with Monmouth but went the professional baseball route after being an early-round selection by the San Diego Padres last June.

Castillo, who also helped Lancaster win the Section VI Class AA football championship for the first time since 1999, also plays basketball.
