Canalside's free skating lessons fill up

[Editor's note: These classes are now full]

Free Skate Great learn-to-skate classes will be offered at The Ice at Canalside during the next three Fridays.

The classes run from 6:15 to 7:15 p.m. through Feb. 17; they're made possible by Cricket Wireless.

Those aged 3 and up can take advantage of learn-to-skate coaching and free skate rentals in the largest program of its kind in Western New York, and fifth largest in the country. Each year, more than 1,000 students learn to skate with Skate Great at five Buffalo-area rinks that participate.

The lessons include not only free admission to classes but they're also for open skating afterward.

The Canalside program can accommodate 35 participants per session on a first-come, first-served basis.

Those interested may contact Kenneth Simmons, director of recreation for the City of Buffalo, at ksimmons@city-buffalo.com. He can direct those interested to a community center in your area.
