A search warrant executed Wednesday afternoon at a Jefferson Avenue residence yielded nearly 40 ounces of heroin worth approximately $200,000, said Erie County Sheriff Timothy B. Howard during a press conference Thursday afternoon.
"That amount of heroin would have resulted in more than 22,000 individual doses," Howard said. "Obviously this was a significant seizure. Three loaded firearms were also recovered, as were packaging material, hydraulic presses and scales."
The joint investigation of the narcotics units from the Buffalo Police Department and the Erie County Sheriff's Office began two months ago, said Howard.
The recovery of nearly 40 ounces of heroin and three illegal weapons made the county a safer place, said Paul J. Williams III, chief of the Erie County District Attorney's Narcotics Bureau.
Shawn Woods, 25, of 974 Jefferson Ave. was charged with possession of a controlled substance, intent to sell, two counts of weapons possession, possession of a stolen weapon, possession of marijuana and misdemeanor charges involving possession of drug paraphernalia.
Howard said Woods was stopped in the vicinity of his apartment and was found to be in possession of marijuana.
"This investigation began months ago with a traffic stop," said Howard. "So once again we go back to the uniformed officers on the street."
