Canisius College goaltender Charles Williams is among six nominees with Western New York connections nominated for college hockey’s Hobey Baker Award. The list includes three other goaltenders with local ties.
Williams, a senior transfer from Ferris State (Mich.) has been a standout for the Golden Griffins all season.
Also nominated from the list of netminders is Alex Iafallo of Eden who plays at Minnesota-Duluth, Parker Gahagen from Williamsville North who plays at Army and Cal Petersen of Notre Dame, who is a Buffalo Sabres draft choice.
Forward Andy Sturtz from Kenmore East who plays at Penn State and Sean Maloney from West Seneca and Nichols School who plays at Harvard also were nominated. Malone was the Buffalo Sabres’ sixth-round draft selection in 2013.
In all 66 players were nominated for the prestigious award which was won by Sabres forward Jack Eichel two year ago and by present New York Ranger Jimmy Vesey last season.
The first phase of fans balloting for the Hobey runs now through March 5. Fans can cast their vote daily at www.hobeybaker.com/vote. Phase Two of the balloting begins on March 16 after the list is narrow to 10 finalists. Voting ends on March 26. Fan votes count for a full one percent of the total ballot in each phase.
