Everyone knows that Buffalo pays a price when it comes to winter.
No one likes having to shovel all of that snow and sometimes the driving makes you
dread leaving the house. But the region has learned to take winters and turn them into
an attraction. Here are some great activities for all ages so you can
make the best of the harsh winter days ahead of us:
Canalside, it’s known for it’s Thursday night free concerts in the summer, but did you know Canalside is also a great destination for winter activities? The Ice at Canalside offers both open ice skating and curling. Don’t have skates? Rental skates are $5 (not including admission).Curling is also a great sport to try, just grab four to 10 other people and make a reservation on the Canalside website. When you can’t bear the cold any longer, head inside to the Winter Lodge, where there is food and drinks – including hot cocoa! https://www.canalsidebuffalo.com
Riverworks, located across the Buffalo River on Ganson Street, has many things to do, such as Open Skate ($5 rental), a curling league, Skate N’ Shoot, hockey leagues, and a women’s roller derby league. The Ward restaurant, right next to the ice rinks, serves tasty food and drink with many big screen TVs showing sporting events. http://buffaloriverworks.com
Chestnut Ridge Park, located in Orchard Park, is beautiful and had all kinds of winter activities, such as tobogganing, sledding, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Tobogganing is open in the weekends from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Fridays from 4 to 8 p.m. The sledding hill is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Chestnut Ridge Park is the perfect place for all sorts of winter activities and is fun for all ages. http://www2.erie.gov/parks/index.php?q=chestnut-ridge
Erie County Botanical Gardens – If you really need a break from the cold weather, check out the new exhibits at the Erie County Botanical Gardens in South Buffalo. There are many different types of exhibits, including a new Aquatic Garden and Asian Rainforest. Make sure to stop by in late February to view the Orchid Show, where you can expand your knowledge on some award-winning orchids.
