Williamsville North High School has been awarded the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association final four for field hockey from 2018-2020.
The NYSPHSAA approved the bid Friday during a meeting in which postseason bids and other various rule changes were among items on the agenda.
"I'm really excited. It's the first time (states) have ever been here," longtime Section VI coordinator Jude Otto said.
Otto said Section VI won the bid over Sections IV (Binghamton area) and V (Rochester area).
Williamsville North just opened a lighted, two all-weather fields facility last fall and hosted the Section VI girls soccer championships.
The fields are side by side, which means tournament officials can have two games going on at the same time if they so choose.
Since Sweet Home won a state title in Class A in 2000, the only Section VI field hockey program to win a state title since has been Williamsville North, which did so in 2007 and 2010 in Class A.
In other noteworthy items from the NYSPHSAA meeting, the first state team wrestling championships dual meet has been awarded to Syracuse and will take place January 2018 at Onondaga Community College. Also, video replay for safety and deduction points has been approved for the state cheerleading championships.
