16-year-old killed Wednesday is brother of young boy shot in August

The teenager fatally shot Wednesday evening is the brother of 8-year-old Donnell "Donny" Bibbes, the boy who was critically injured when he was shot in the head in August while sitting in a car with two older brothers and his mother, authorities said late Thursday night.

Police described the slaying of 16-year-old Lewis Brewer and the shooting of Donnell, who was an unintended target, as being gang-related. Lewis and Donnell are the sons of Chawniqua Johnson.

Lewis was not in the car parked on the 400 block of South Division Street in August when a gunman opened fire, intending to shoot Davieon White, Donnell's 19-year-old brother. The shooter got out of another car and fired as many as 15 bullets from about 20 feet away.

Whether there is a connection between the Aug. 26 shooting and Wednesday's is under investigation, a police source familiar with the probe said.

Lewis was fatally shot just after 6 p.m. Wednesday in a vacant lot on the first block of French Street near Martin Luther King Jr. Park. He is the eighth homicide victim so far this month, making it the most deadly January in at least 10 years.

Homicide detectives continue to investigate the slaying. Anyone with information on the shootings is asked to called the Buffalo Police Department’s Confidential Tip Call Line at 847-2255.
