Mount St. Mary will be the latest Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association girls’ basketball team to pay tribute to the late Sister Maria Pares, according to Sacred Heart Athletic Director Barbara Rooney.
The admission gate from Monday’s junior varsity and varsity games between the host Thunder and Sacred Heart will be donated to Roswell Park Cancer Institute in memory of Pares. The JV game starts at 5 with varsity to follow at 6:30 p.m.
Pares was a pioneer in women's sports and Hall of Fame coach who built Sacred Heart into a perennial championship contender. She died last Friday at age 75 from cancer complications.
"We want to honor her life," Mount AD Sarah Galante said. "She's the definition of a role model."
Last Saturday, Cardinal O’Hara had a moment of silence prior to the start of its basketball game against Jamesville-DeWitt to honor Pares. Sacred Heart had a prayer service and moment of silence last Monday prior to its game. The school also has set up a memorial for Pares.
Monsignor Martin Interim Executive Director Pete Schneider said the traditional postseason game program will feature a tribute to Pares.
She “was a one-time leader of the Monsignor Martin High School Athletic Association and has done wonderful things for all sports but in particular women’s sports in the MMHSAA,” he said.
