A close game got away in a hurry from the Canisius women’s basketball team.
Siena outscored the Golden Griffins by more than a 2-to-1 margin in the middle quarters to earn a 67-42 victory in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference on Thursday at the Alumni Recreation Center in Loudonville.
Jackie Benitez had 15 points to lead four players in double figures for the Saints, winners of five in a row.
The road proved to be unkind for another Big 4 team as the Niagara women suffered a 61-45 set back against Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn.
Canisius (6-14, 5-6) trailed 15-14 after one, but the Saints (8-12, 7-4) outscored their guest 18-8 to take a 33-22 lead into halftime. They further extended the lead with a 22-11 third quarter to snap the Griffs’ two-game winning streak. Kollyns Scarbrough scored half of her 12 points during the second quarter while Benitez had five for Siena.
Maria Welch’s 13 points led Canisius, which returns to action Saturday at Marist in Poughkeepsie.
At the TD Bank Sports Center, Victoria Rampado (17 points) scored six points during Niagara’s 8-2 first-quarter closing run that staked the Purple Eagles (5-15, 2-9) to a 14-11 lead.
The first-place Bobcats surged ahead for good during the second quarter. Niagara pulled within 37-34 with 6:46 left in the third, but Quinnipiac (17-4, 10-1) limited NU to just two field goals during the next 11:31, extending its lead to 50-38.
Niagara returns to action Saturday at Fairfield.
