Z80 Labs, Buffalo's internet-focused technology incubator, today named Jon Spitz as its new managing director.
Spitz joins Z80 Labs from 43North, the $5 million startup competition he helped launch in 2014. He will succeed Steve Poland, who has served as managing director for the past two years and has been instrumental in building the tech community in Buffalo.
When the transition takes effect Feb. 1, Spitz will become Z80's third managing director since it was founded in 2012. Poland succeeded Dan Magnuszewski, who served as the company's first managing director and left in December 2014 to become chief technology officer of ACV Auctions.
To date, Z80 has invested roughly $4.5 million in 21 companies.
"Z80 Labs was built to spur change and create a new economy in Buffalo," Spitz said in a statement. "I'm extremely eager to find the next great collection of startups right here in Buffalo."
While at 43North, Spitz held the positions of operations manager and director of development. He holds a bachelor's degree in communication from the University at Buffalo and an MBA from Medaille College.
Poland will remain on the company's board of directors and said he will lead a new startup business locally. No details have been announced.
