The NFL has diminished itself by letting the Chargers move to Los Angeles.
No doubt, leaving San Diego is in the best financial interests of owner Dean Spanos. He will sell plenty of luxury boxes and the value of his franchise will skyrocket. If the formerly lowly NBA Clippers can sell for $2 billion, Spanos will reap a huge reward if he sells.
But NFL owners got too caught up in the excitement of the new stadium Rams owner Stan Kroenke is building when they gave Spanos a pass to move. Spanos should have worked harder and paid more to get a new stadium done in San Diego.
A lot of sports franchises have moved. This is a first. Never has a team moved to a city that is utterly disinterested in it.
The NFL is taking a business away from a market where it has 56 years of history, is beloved and has a monopoly and putting it in a market that doesn’t care and has enormous competition.
I hope the Chargers lose for years to come in front of sterile, apathetic crowds.
