Kevin R. Surdyke received unanimous approval to fill a vacancy on the Lackawanna City Council at Monday night's regular meeting.
Surdyke, retired from the Lackawanna Municipal Housing Authority, will represent the city's Fourth Ward filling the seat vacated by former councilman Jeff DePasquale, who was appointed city clerk at the beginning of this year. Surdyke's term will expire on Dec. 31.
In other action, the council approved the appropriation of $107,000 to pay McMahon & Mann Consulting Engineers, the firm hired to study Smokes Creek erosion issues along Sharon Parkway.
The firm was recommended by Lackawanna consultant engineer Kenneth J. Strell Sr. because of its experience with erosion concerns involving Tonawanda Creek in the towns of Pendleton, Amherst and Clarence.
Lackawanna officials are expected to meet with the engineering firm Thursday to review the findings.
