Pedestrian struck in Wheatfield remains unconscious

WHEATFIELD - A female pedestrian struck by a vehicle Saturday night remains unconscious at Erie County Medical Center and, contrary to earlier reports, the male driver of the vehicle has not been charged, authorities said Monday morning.

The investigation continues into the crash, which happened at about 10 p.m. near the intersection of River and Williams roads and seriously injured the woman, according to the Niagara County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities have not released the identity of the woman because they are still working to confirm who she is, said Chief Deputy Steven C. Preisch.

Officials believe they know the identity of the woman, but she has no immediate family in the area, Preisch said.

The woman is believed to be a resident a mobile home park on the south side of River Road and she may have been crossing River Road to get to a convenience store on the corner of River and Williams, Preisch said.

The road conditions at the time were good, though "a little bit foggy," Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour said on Sunday. The area where the collision occurred was dark and the woman was wearing dark clothing, Voutour said.
