Incendiary device used to start apartment building fire

A 63-year-old Olean man was identified by police Sunday as the suspect in a fire early Saturday morning that forced tenants out of a Bailey Avenue apartment building.

Buffalo fire marshals arrested Roger Cornell in connection with the fire at 437 Bailey. Cornell was charged late Saturday night with arson, criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.

Fire marshals say that Cornell used an incendiary device to start the fire just after 5 a.m. Saturday. Nearly 20 people were displaced due to the fire and two cats died, authorities said. Police did not reveal a motive for the blaze.

Fire marshals Edwin Ortiz and Wil Tyler helped lead the investigation. Buffalo police, State Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms assisted.
