Former New York State Golden Gloves champion Lionell Thompson of Buffalo will return to the ring Feb. 24 and it’ll be part of Showtime’s “ShoBox: The New Generation” card.
Thompson, who now lives and trains in Las Vegas and is part of Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s stable of boxers at Mayweather Promotions, will be looking for his 18th professional victory when he takes on Steve Lovett at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, Calif., in a light heavyweight contest.
The 31-year-old Thompson is 17-4 with 10 wins via knockout. He is coming off a victory via decision over then 25-win fighter and former two-time IBF United States Boxing Association champion Donovan George last September.
All but one of Thompson’s losses has been via split decision. The lone exception was a TKO loss to eventual undisputed world champion Sergey Kovalev (30-1) more than four years ago.
The 31-year-old Lovett (15-1) is coming off his first career loss to Craig Baker via knockout.
