Prep Talk Boys Athlete of the Week: Tavien Kemp of Walsh

Something's up in Olean this season. Baskets have been filled with basketballs this season.

Tavien Kemp is one of those responsible. Kemp has been piling up the points for Archbishop Walsh this season, as he's the top scorer in Western New York boys basketball.

For example, Kemp had 46 points in a recent win against St. Mary's of Lancaster. He also added 11 rebounds and four steals for the Eagles. Later in the week, Kemp had 43 against Frewsburg.

He already went past the 1,000 mark for his career. Now Kemp is the Prep Talk Boys Athlete of the Week.

Class: Senior.

Position: PG.

Uniform number: 3.

Coach Andy Moore on Kemp: "Tavien has been on a great scoring tear to start the season, and has done so within the structure of the team.  He has been very patient with his inexperienced teammates, and done everything he could to help the team win."

How has your season gone so far? "The season has gone well so far. We are currently 7-3 but a few losses came down to a couple possessions. I’m currently averaging 37 points, 11 rebounds, and 5 steals per game."

Highlight of athletic career so far: "Upsetting Nichols at home my sophomore year and being named to fourth team of All-WNY."

Favorite thing about my sport: "I enjoy the competitive nature and the pace of basketball. I also enjoy being able to be the leader of a team."

Favorite teammate: "My brother, Latrell Butler-Kemp. It’s always fun getting to play with him."

Toughest opponent: "So far this season, Corning was our toughest opponent. All of our league games will be tough, especially against the large schools such as Park, Canisius, Timon, etc."

WNY athlete I looked up to: "I’ve always looked up to my dad. He has always been a role model for me."

Pro/college athlete I admire now: "Damian Lillard."

When I’m not playing or practicing my sport, I’m: "Keeping up with my schoolwork or just hanging out with my friends."

What’s ahead: "I hope to attend a year of prep school for a post-graduate year to continue my athletic and academic career. I hope to be able to play at the Division 1 level one day."
