The University at Buffalo didn’t have time to sit around and sulk over its first loss of the season. The Bulls had to go right back to work.
UB played its third game in three days on Saturday night, and earned a 71-45 win over Miami (Ohio) in Alumni Arena. It was the 11th win of the season for the Bulls to go with one loss, and it came in the opener of the Mid-American Conference schedule.
Buffalo lost to Harvard Friday night in a tournament at Fordham in New York City.
Twelve different players were on the floor for at least 10 minutes, and the scoresheet had a very balanced look as a result. All 12 scored at least three points.
JoAnna Smith was the leading scorer for the Bulls, picking up 11 points despite going 4 for 16 from the field. Theresa Onwuka finished with 10 points in only 17 minutes. Kristen Levering led Miami with 10 points.
UB has earned something of a breather. It plays at Ohio University on Wednesday.
In Saturday’s other game involving a Big 4 team, the St. Bonaventure women made a spirited comeback but couldn’t quite close the sale. The Bonnies dropped a 52-49 decision to George Mason in Fairfax, Va.
St. Bonaventure (6-8, 1-1 Atlantic 10) trailed, 50-37, with 4 minutes, 22 seconds left in the game. But the Bonnies fought back by scoring 10 straight points in the waning minutes and they got the deficit down to 51-49 with 21 seconds left.
After a Patriots’ foul shot, Mariah Ruff had a look at a three-pointer that would have tied the game. But it went around the rim and fell out, Gabby Richmond couldn’t score on the follow, and George Mason’s Sylvia Maxwell grabbed the rebound to preserve the win.
Ruff finished with 18 points to lead the Bonnies, while Richmond had 13. Kara Wright scored 20 points for George Mason (9-6, 2-0 A-10).
Bona returns home on Wednesday to take on Dayton.
