Falls man with handgun is charged with menacing

NIAGARA FALLS – A man arrested Saturday morning for brandishing a handgun during an argument in his home later claimed to have been beaten by arresting officers, Niagara Falls police said.

Timothy M. Sootheran, 27, was arrested in his 20th Street apartment building just after 9:30 a.m. Police said he held a handgun behind his back while confronting another tenant, who had tried to help a man with whom Sootheran was arguing.

Police who arrested Sootheran at gunpoint said they recovered two pellet guns, and there were three children, ages 9 to 3 months, in the apartment at the time of the disturbance.

While being booked on a charge of second-degree menacing charge, Sootheran claimed he was beaten by the two arresting officers and suffered a broken nose, police said.
