Tonawanda highway chief suffers heart attack before Flynn swearing in

The highway superintendent for the Town of Tonawanda suffered a heart attack at the Erie County Courthouse Friday morning shortly after he arrived to attend the swearing in of John Flynn as Erie County District Attorney.

William E. Swanson was at the courthouse for just a few minutes when Swanson said he didn't feel well, according to Tonawanda Councilmember Daniel J. Crangle.

"He had to sit down, and he said he thought he was having a heart attack," Crangle said. "He had a prior one about 10 years ago."

Rescue personnel quickly responded and Swanson was taken to Buffalo General Medical Center, where he underwent surgery to relieve a blockage in an artery. Crangle added that Flynn, who previously served as Tonawanda town attorney and as town justice, asked to be kept apprised of Swanson's condition.
