Dorothy Marie Schumm, active crafter

Oct. 8, 1936 – Dec. 28, 2016

Dorothy Marie Schumm, of East Amherst, an ardent crafter who took part in many shows locally, died Wednesday in Sheridan Manor Nursing Home, Town of Tonawanda, after a lengthy illness. She was 80.

Born in Jersey City, N.J., the former Dorothy Borcherding was an honor student in high school in Weehawken, N.J., where she sang in the school choir and the lead in the annual school play. She also taught Sunday school classes.

She graduated with honors from Trenton State Teachers College, where she took part in the choir and theatrical programs. During summer breaks, she worked at Chase Bank in New York City and was a waitress on weekends in Seaside Heights on the Jersey Shore.

After college, she taught primary grades for two years in Glen Rock, N.J. She moved to Buffalo from Indiana in 1968.

Mrs. Schumm displayed and sold her items for the past 30 years at many of the area’s Christmas and summer arts and crafts shows. They included wreaths, flower and animal magnets, handstitched hangings, needlepoint and crosstitch.

She was a longtime member of Trinity Lutheran Church in East Amherst, where she was a choir member for 20 years.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Theodore; two sons, Christopher W. and Jeffrey M.; and two granddaughters.
