And the cupcake champion is...
Buffalo's Fairy Cakes Cupcakery, whose co-owners Kelly Audette and Mo Torpey walked away from the latest episode of the Cooking Channel show "Cupcake Showdown" with $10,000 and bragging rights over their flour-dusted competitors.
The episode, which was taped in July and aired Dec. 27, featured Audette and Torpey showing off their well-honed cupcake skills in a stiff-as-meringue competition against fellow bakers.
Reached the day after the episode aired, Audette said that even though she and Torpey knew the results of the competition, watching the show surrounded by friends, family and customers was "nerve-wracking."
"It was weird to see myself on national television," Audette said. But, she added, it was worth it -- not only for the $10,000 prize, but for increased exposure that is already paying off for her business.
"Today's already been busy," she said. "People are just excited and already it's [encouraged] new customers coming in, which is awesome."
Audette attributed her team's success to their 10 years of experience and their ability to problem-solve as a team.
"We work so well together. Even when we made mistakes, we quickly bounced back," she said. "We just made stuff we felt like the judges would be impressed with."
And so they were.
