Homeroom Announcements: Tuesday's big games & more

Schools may be off on break, but we're up and ready to go. Get yourself ready for today's #PrepTalkLive action with everything you need to know about the day ahead in high school sports.

What to watch for Tuesday

1. Boys basketball - Ken-Ton Tournament at Kenmore East

No. 5 small school Cardinal O'Hara (2-3) and honorable mention large school Kenmore West (2-4) get the Ken-Ton Tournament started at 5 p.m. Four players average double figures for the Hawks: Justin Hemphill (18.8 points per game), Jermaine Haynes (17.2 ppg), Rene Velazquez (11 ppg) and Torree Cheatham (10.6 ppg). The Blue Devils are led offensively by the senior duo of Tyler Aquilina and Tal James.

Kenmore East (2-3) and No. 10 large school St. Joe's (3-3) play at 6:30 p.m. in Tuesday's finale. The Bulldogs are led offensively by Nate Murdie (14.5 ppg) and D'Anzo Young (10 ppg). All three of St. Joe's losses have come against teams from outside Western New York. Senior Caleb Cockrell (11.5 ppg) is the lone Marauder averaging double figures.

Tuesday's winners play at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow in the championship game.

2. Girls basketball - Depew Tournament

Honorable mention small school Newfane (3-3) and Iroquois (5-1) kick off the top girls tournament of the day at 6 p.m. The Panthers, led by juniors Paige Emborsky (18.5 ppg) and Emily Foltz (12.3 ppg), are looking to bounce back from a 49-47 loss to Albion last Wednesday. The Chiefs are on a three-game win streak over West Seneca East, Alden and Hamburg. Juniors Riley Reidel and Taylor Quinn lead Iroquois offensively.

No. 9 small school Depew (4-4) hosts Olmsted (3-0) at 7:30 p.m. in the nightcap. The Wildcats sit at .500 but have faced stiff competition this season with their losses coming to ranked schools Wilson, Frewsburg, Lake Shore and East Aurora. Seniors Aviance Clark (18.5 ppg) and Tess Borgosz (11.7 ppg) lead the team in scoring. Olmsted has had blowout wins over I-Prep/Grover, City Honors and South Park. Eighth-grader Gabrielle McDuffie averages 19 ppg for the Owls.

The winners play Thursday at 7:30 p.m. for the tournament title.

3. Boys basketball - Five Guys Holiday Tournament at Williamsville North

Honorable mention small school St. Mary's of Lancaster (3-1) faces Williamsville East (1-6) in the opening game at 6 p.m.. The Lancers suffered their first loss of the season last Friday against Cheektowaga, 67-50. Juniors Eric Brown and Christian Szablewski are their top scorers. The Flames have lost six straight since starting the season with a win against I-Prep/Grover. Drew Butler (13.2 ppg) and Patrick Ranallo (13 ppg) lead East in scoring.

Williamsville North (4-1) hosts winless Emerson (0-7) at 7:30 p.m. The Spartans scored a big nonleague win Friday over No. 6 large school McKinley, 52-44. Corey Swiech scored a game-high 19 points, including five three-pointers. Jairus Huggins and Joe Nusall added 15 and 10 points, respectively. Tyreek Edwards is the top Eagle at 20.6 points and six rebounds per game.

Winners play at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow in the championship.

4. Boys hockey - Northtown Center doubleheader

A pair of out-of-town teams in Section V's McQuaid and Section I's Pelham head to Buffalo for nonleague matchups on the Northtown Center feature rink.

McQuaid (6-2) takes on Williamsville East (4-1) in the first game at 1 p.m. East's Mike Steffan leads the Federation in points with eight goals and seven assists on the season. Sean MacLeay and William Mann are next with two goals and four assists apiece. The Knights beat Williamsville South in November, with its losses coming to Williamsville North and Pelham.

Then Niagara-Wheatfield (3-2) hosts Pelham (7-1) at 3 p.m. The Falcons are riding a three-game win streak over Will East, Canisius and Lancaster. Nick Breier leads the team with four goals and five points, while five others have four points each. The Pelicans beat Orchard Park, 4-1, back on Dec. 2.

The Section VI schools swap opponents tomorrow, with East and Pelham playing at 1 p.m. and Wheatfield and McQuaid at 3 p.m.

- Gowanda vs. Pioneer, 4:30 p.m.

West Seneca Invitational at West Seneca East
- Lake Shore vs. West Seneca West, 4:30 p.m.
- Lew-Port vs. West Seneca East, 6 p.m.

Girls hoops
Frewsburg Tournament
- Dunkirk vs. Falconer, 2 p.m.
- Frewsburg vs. Gowanda, 4 p.m.
JCC Holiday Classic
- Chautauqua Lake vs. Sherman, 6 p.m.
- Cassadaga Valley vs. Southwestern, 7:30 p.m.
Springville Tournament
- Pioneer vs. West Seneca East, noon
- Oracle vs. Springville, 3 p.m.
